Breaking Down the “Leaked” Steelers Color Rush Uniform Scheme

https://twitter.com/NFL_Leaks/status/721419148920619008

This little nugget dropped on Twitter over the weekend.  While some pairings weren’t earth shattering (the Panthers going with blue) other’s did leave the fan bases questioning the motives (the Raiders couldn’t possibly go gold right? Makes no sense… right?)

/articleimages/olderlogo.jpgSidebar: Technically the original Raiders were black and gold too but Al Davis wasn’t feeling the sex appeal (he was wrong) and changed to the Black and Silver.  Uniform History Guides even include the jersey’s with gold letters as part of their history so the idea of the Raider’s color rush being gold isn’t completely crazy, just don’t tell that to the Raiders.

Awkward…..

Back to the reason you’re all here.

According to this unconfirmed leak, the Steelers are preparing to wear all gold/yellow for their Thursday night football encounter with the Indianapolis Colts.  Not exactly breaking the mold considering both the Pirates and Penguins welcomed gold back to their uniform pallets with open arms.

Art Rooney II however threw a wrench into gold uniforms, when he couldn’t wrap his old man brain around the potential of a different uniform on gameday.

“We had our options,” said Rooney. “We had some presentations from Nike in terms of what the options were, and we decided our color-option was going to be black, and the default option is going to be white. When you’re the road team, the home team gets to decide what it’s wearing. If for some reason the Colts would decide to wear white, we would wear black. We just felt black was more of our predominant color (than gold).”

Hot take: Someone left Art out of the room where they decided to sell some new gold jerseys.

Gold over gold wouldn’t be awful, the Steelers already use that for training camp.  Personally, I don’t like the NFL’s idea that only allowing one helmet per season.  College teams like Oregon use a dozed helmets a season and it would make sense that having to re calibrate each week would only ensure the players safety.  Nike is stuck having to draw up uniforms that would be fresh yet match up with their existing helmet.  The NFL put them in a corner and with the exception of The Color Blind bowl, the color rush movement was an interesting one.

USA Today also put their crack staff on photoshop duty coloring yellow over black on the existing jersey for this stretch:

The change in the Steelers uniforms when the NFL switched from Rebok to Nike were minimal at best.  Judging from the adjustments Nike made with the Rams and Jaguars I think Nike is foaming at the mouth to create a newer look for the Steelers that will send your old school father into a fit of rage when they look different.  The good news for Nike is the people who buy jersey’s will lose their mind and gush like The U did when they got new uniforms.
