Interesting premise and absolutely perfect execution. We have to tip our cap however to the “manager” on the other end of the call because this could have just as easily been an outtake when she called him out for pranking her.
The best part about having a real job is the major upgrade to calling out. If you feel like shit, or see blue skies and want to fish all you gotta do is grab your phone and send out a nice email The trick here is to use a few words as possible so tomorrow you can continue to sell how dead you were and that you barely had the energy to compose that email. Something like this usually does the trick: “Sick, out today.” Boom there you go. Cant get into a wordy email where you leave yourself vulnerable for more questions. With that email you can sit on diarrhea the next day to get Mr. Nosey off you back.
This video is humbling. I worked summer jobs through college where these phone calls were a weekly occurrence. Its a miracle I made it out that summer when just about every Friday I would suffer from back spasms, dizziness, migraines, food poisoning, sinus infections, and even strep. Thankfully my iron immune system and perseverance would get me healthy enough to get back to work Monday.
The reality is however that there are people out there grinding who have to make these calls when they need out of work. I already get a chuckle when I look behind the counter at a fast food joint because its clear they’re doing waaaaaay more actual work than I do in an 8 hour shift. The fact that they have to work that much harder to get out of work is fitting.
