Draft day is upon us and while Kevin Costner may not be wheeling and dealing who know’s what Howie Roseman is doing in Philly and it wouldn’t shock me to see him complete more trades and somehow land the Browns on the wrong side of all this.
The Steelers head into Thursday night right now with 6 picks and a seventh compensatory pick. Their main needs will be in the secondary however with the recent suspension of Martavis Bryant it wouldn’t shock me to see the Steelers use a later pick on a Wide Receiver and turn him into another stud.I have seen other sites pretend offensive line is an area of need however Ben Roethlisberger was the NFL’s least-pressured quarterback in 2015 (19.9 percent of passes according to ESPN Stats & Info).
Here is how the Steelers can walk out with an A+ grade in the 2016 draft assuming there’s no trades.
First round: 25th overall selection Pretty much a guarantee here that the Steelers go DB and there are some sexy options available. While I would love Jaylen Ramsey, he’s shot up the boards leading up to the draft and will likely be drafted top 5. Other options like Vernon Hargreaves would be a nice fit but I think come off the board ahead of 25. The guy I like here is Eli Apple. He’s got a larger frame and while he at times was pushed around by bigger wide-receivers I think that he can add more mass on that frame and become a premier lockdown corner. He played a lot of press coverage at the college level against some very elite wide receivers and should quickly become on of the league premier pass defenders.
Second round: 58th overall selection Jaylon Smith is going to be the biggest lottery play of the draft. He was a consensus top 10 pick at the end of the regular season but after a severe knee injury and questions about nerve damage there is an obvious risk here. He has already stated he will “redshirt” his rookie year however if you’d ask me to give up a second rounder for a top ten in next years draft I would in a heartbeat. This defense could shape up to swarm in 2017 and given they were a play away from the AFC Championship last year I don’t know how impactful a second round pick could really be.
Third round: 89th overall selection In light of Martavis Bryant’s suspension its time to make another splash with the Swiss Army Knife of the draft with Braxton Miller. He lit it up during practice at the senior bowl and even admitted he emulated Antonio Brown. The guy is a freak with the ball in his hands and can fit in nicely with the rest of the wide receivers AND provide Le’Veon with a breather here and there and come out of the back field. A perfect compliment to AB outside and on punts and a perfect complement to LB inside on hand offs. Coming away with a two time Big Ten player of the year in the third round is hitting it rich.
Fourth round: 123rd overall selection Alright here is where people are going to lose there minds. Is this a reach? Maybe. But what if I could get you, in the fourth round mind you, a QB who was undefeated as a starter and had a National Championship on his resume? That guy is going to be around AND he is an absolutely perfect candidate to sit behind Ben Roethlisberger and copy his skill set. If the Steelers can land Cardale Jones here I think they are setting themselves up for a seamless transition to live in a Post-Ben world. There were already whispers that Ben was tired of taking the abuse and was ready to retire. Cardale Jones’ nickname is 12-Gauge due to his off the charts arm strength. He is a big athletic QB not unlike Ben and while in his current state, isn’t close to a franchise QB he could stand to benefit from a few years in the system ala Aaron Rodgers and take the kings throne when its vacated.
Sixth round: 220th overall pick (compensatory) Brandon Boykin and Josh Scobee cost the Steelers the 164th and 201st picks and that really hurts here. If they could work there way back to a pick around 164 I think Cardale could fit in there allowing the Steelers to use their 123rd on a guy like Jeremy Cash at safety. Ladarius Green filled the hole Heath Miller’s retirement created but maybe a pick here on a guy like Ryan Malleck could lay some foundation for life after Ladarius. Malleck’s stats at Virginia Tech weren’t incredible but he did start at tight end the last two years and has the body for an NFL tight end. With so much electricity at wideout Malleck can make some money finding holes in zone coverage and converting first downs.
Seventh round: 229th overall pick & 246th overall pick I have no idea what happens here. They could add some depth on the offensive line or send the wide receiver whisperer out to find another stud late.
